Preschool Philosophy
I am very passionate about creating a positive first learning school experience
for young children! I feel it is vital to create a nurturing environment that
enables each child to be comfortable and confident in attending school. A
constructive preschool learning experience can cultivate a positive self-esteem
while children work and play to figure out who they are and how they fit into
the world. Learning to: socialize, play cooperatively and use independent
problem solving skills are vital to a child’s transition into Kindergarten.
Together we will initiate positive socialization and self-confidence through
stories, songs, art, sensory play, music and movement, learning, and free
play.
WHY
CREATIVE BEGINNINGS?
I am dedicated to providing a quality early school experience for preschoolers
through teaching and independent play that peaks each child's curiosity and
develops the "whole child," encompassing intellectual, social, emotional,
physical and creative growth. I also realize that a child’s early years can
help build the foundation for their lifetime pursuit of a happy, successful
life.

About the Program and Classroom Itself
The
classroom is an ever changing environment! The surroundings reflect our
themes and the changes in season, being very bright and welcoming for our
little scholars!
Various play centers are set up with that will include: a circle time area for stories, songs and games, dramatic play, dress-up, art, sensory play, blocks,
puzzles, building, climbing, & books! New to the 2012/2013 school year will see the addition of a computer and a science table! Aspects of the centers will change
with the themes where possible to increase the value of the learning experience
for each child. They will be set up in such a way to encourage cooperative play,
while leaving room for independant investigation as well!
In addition to the
play centers there is the craft/snack time room where we do daily
activites or art that go with our weekly theme. I am a 'process, not product'
instructor! In other words, it doesn't matter what the art project looks like
when it is done - just that the child enjoyed and learned from the process of
making it! The craft time will encourage freedom to be creative and explore
various art medias.
There is a daily Circle Time that can include
storybooks, flannel stories, singing, fingerplays, rhymes, games, group discussion, and movement songs
that will follow our weekly theme as well!
The learning experiences will be
integrated into all parts of your child's preschool surroundings - although we
do not focus on the ABC's through things like worksheets, there will always be oportunities to learn early math concepts, pre-reading (in phonics based class), shapes colors and so much more - but maybe not in the way we traditionally think! Teaching
of these areas will be incorporated into the programming as well as the
classroom surroundings so that it is positive and fun, while allowing for
creativity and individuality which makes it developmentally appropriate to match how children best learn at this age!
Please check out this wonderful link that talks about what is developementally appropriate learning for preschool aged children: http://www.earlychildhoodnews.com/earlychildhood/article_view.aspx?ArticleID=134
Centre Based Play: Even our playtime includes learning! I take a centre based approach to the classroom play which means there are divided centres in the classroom. Each child has a 'centre stick' with his/her name on it that they use to enter each play area. Each area allows a certain amount of children in order to keep a safe and appropriate number of children in each area. There is a number and that certain amount of spaces on each centre sign. If there is no more space in that area, the child will choose another area to play in - this is a way of introduing early math concepts!
Early Literacy Program: Creative Beginnings Preschool encourages literacy around every corner! We have a 'Backpack Buddy' literacy program. Every week, a child gets to take home the Backpack Buddy and everyone has a turn! Each buddy is a book series character that goes home in a special backpack with storybooks, a matching game, coloring activities, songs to sing and many other opportunities to learn! The preschooler gets a chance to look after the buddy while enjoying the stories and activities, and then the family writes in a journal what adventures the backpack buddy was able to go on with that child. When the child returns the buddy and backpack, we take some time during circle time to have the child stand in front of the class (if comfortable with that) and tell us what they did during their time with the buddy! As well as having a child be excited about reading, it can also be a great start to linking home and school, as well as giving each child pride for taking care of something 'on their own' and self confidence as they discuss their adventures with the class!
We also make monthly SCHOLASTIC BOOK ORDERS available to our students and families - they have an amazing selection of books at fabulous prices and free books can be ordered for the classroom when families place orders!
We have a STAR OF THE DAY program that the children really look forward to! Each day, a different child gets to be the 'Star of the Day!' That day, the child gets to mark the day of the week on the calendar, change the weather chart, be the line leader, first to wash hands and open the snack room door and turn on the light, and help hand out snack! When handing out snack, we discuss what each child's name starts with and take note of the sound it makes as the star hands it out.
Monthly calendars will go home with each child
so that you as parents can help your child look forward to and talk about what
is coming up -- this enables the whole family become a part of the learning
experience!
JUST PLAYING
by
Anita Wadley
When I'm building in the block room,
Please don't say I'm "Just
playing."
For, you see, I'm learning as I play, about balance,
•
I may be an architect someday.
•
When I'm getting all dressed up,
•
Setting the table, caring for the babies,
Don't get the idea I'm "Just
Playing."
I may be a mother or a father someday.
•
When you see me up
to my elbows in paint,
Or standing at an easel, or molding and shaping clay,
•
Please don't let me hear you say, "He is Just Playing."
For, you see, I'm
learning as I play.
I just might be a teacher someday.
•
When you see
me engrossed in a puzzle
Or some "playing" at my school,
Please don't
feel the time is wasted in "play."
For you see, I'm learning as I play.
I'm learning to solve problems and concentrate.
I may be in business
someday.
•
When you see me cooking or tasting foods,
Please don't
think that because I enjoy it, it is "Just Play."
I'm learning to follow
directions and see the differences.
I may be a cook someday.
•
When you
see me learning to skip, hop, run, and move my body,
Please don't say I'm
"Just Playing."
For, you see, I'm learning as I play. I'm learning how my
body works.
I may be a doctor, nurse, or athlete someday.
•
When you
ask me what I've done at school today,
And I say, "I just played."
Please
don't misunderstand me.
For, you see, I'm learning as I play.
I'm learning
to enjoy and be successful in my work.
I'm preparing for tomorrow.
Today,
I am a child and my work is play.
